Biostimulators FAQ
What exactly is a biostimulator?
It is a biocompatible substance injected into the skin to trigger a “controlled injury” response. This activates fibroblasts—the cells responsible for collagen—to regenerate tissue, improving skin elasticity, thickness, and volume over time.
How are they different from dermal fillers?
The main difference is the mechanism of action and the timeline for results.
- Dermal Fillers: Usually made of hyaluronic acid to provide immediate, visible volume.
- Biostimulators: Often use ingredients like Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) or Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA). They offer gradual, natural-looking results as your body builds new tissue.
How long do results take and how long do they last?
- Timeline: You won’t see a change overnight. Noticeable improvements typically begin around 4–6 weeks, with full results appearing between 3–6 months.
- Longevity: Because they utilize your own collagen, results are quite durable, often lasting 18 to 24 months. Yearly maintenance is usually recommended to sustain the look.
Are biostimulators safe?
Yes, widely used brands like Sculptra and Radiesse are FDA-approved. They are considered safe when administered by a trained medical professional, as the materials eventually dissolve and are absorbed by the body.
Common Post-Treatment FAQ
- What is the downtime? Downtime is minimal. You may experience temporary swelling, redness, or bruising for 24–48 hours.
- Are they reversible? Generally, no. Unlike hyaluronic acid fillers, biostimulators cannot be quickly dissolved with an enzyme, so precise application is critical.
- What should I avoid after treatment? For at least two weeks, avoid facials, facial massages, or laser treatments that could interfere with how the product settles.
Who is the ideal candidate?
Biostimulators are best for individuals with:
- Mild to moderate skin laxity (sagging).
- Hollow areas in the cheeks, temples, or jawline.
- A preference for subtle, progressive rejuvenation rather than a “done” look.
